Welcome back, folks. RE's August issue is up.
Fiction:
Just in case the title alone doesn't get you, let us say you shouldn't miss our featured story, "In the Time of Apple Maggots." This story of a crumbling infrastructure on a planet that has turned against its polluters is as dark as it is moving. Equally dark but more fantasy-based is returning author JoSelle Vanderhooft's "The Tragedy of Ferdinand," the story of a lonely lycanthrope.
On the lighter side, we have Joshua Moses (another returning author, and award winner) and "The Hammer," where mischievous Loki works hard to explain economics and land some pretty ladies. Sean Sakamoto's "Duster," on the other hand, has a country girl trying to make it in the city and learning what "dropping wobbly" is in the most unexpected way.
Nonfiction:
Sometimes you just need to know how to kill people. Associate Editor Romie Stott tackles writing fight scenes in fiction in "Bustin' Caps, Bashing Heads, and Bloody Knives: Writing Realistic Violence," covering everything from adrenal responses to human fragility. Karl El-Koura, on the other hand, tackles prepping your fiction for the unfriendly reader in "Goodbye, Gentle Reader," while Elizabeth Bear explains how to navigate the elaborate workings of intrigue in "The Politics of Dancing."
We also have three book reviews, two on authors who have contributed to RE: Elizabeth Bear's Scardown, Sarah Monette's Mélusine, and Catherynne Valente's Yume No Hon.
Enjoy. :)

Re: suggestion
I would be very much like to hire additional book reviewers at some point in the future, particularly when we have some more money; at the moment, we are mostly focusing on fic&nonfic, as most people seem to prefer more of those than book reviews. That said, I wouldn't be replacing Romie - to me, at least, it's very important that RE have a continuous voice. Personally, I would prefer a regular reviewer; rather like Ebert, you sort of know what to expect (can go check other reviews), so you aren't left wondering "did I get stuck with a particularly harsh reviewer/particularly easy reviewer?" In addition, most e-zines don't do double reviews to give books second chances, and I recall very few that include excerpts, so I don't think we're too unusual in that respect. (And, of course, we do provide a summary for those who wish to read it.)
Having hung out with and worked with Sarah Monette, I certainly wish her the best - I think she's incredibly talented - but I didn't feel Romie's review was unsubstantiated.
Many thanks for your comment. :)
